Getting There
Travel to Japan
Tips and information for your journey to Japan.
Planning Your Journey
Booking Flights
Most of you will be flying in from Canada or the United States. When you compare fares, keep in mind there are a few airports you can fly into (more on that below).
Entry & Arrival
Good news — citizens of the U.S. and Canada don't need a visa for stays under 90 days, so there's nothing to apply for. Just make sure your passport is valid through your trip. Before you land, you can fill out Japan's quick online arrival registration ("Visit Japan Web") to breeze through immigration and customs.
Choosing an Airport
You have three good options. The most convenient is Kansai International Airport (KIX) near Osaka — it's the closest to Kyoto. You can also fly into either of Tokyo's airports, Haneda (HND) or Narita (NRT), and continue on to Kyoto by bullet train. Compare prices and routes across all three; whichever works best for you is a great choice.
Getting to Kyoto
From Kansai (KIX): you can take a train or bus directly from the airport to Kyoto — roughly 75 to 90 minutes. From Tokyo: from Haneda, a train into the city reaches Tokyo Station in about 30–45 minutes; from Narita, an airport express train takes around 60 minutes. From Tokyo Station, the bullet train (shinkansen) brings you to Kyoto in about 2 hours and 15 minutes.
