Japan Tips

Helpful tips to make your trip smooth and enjoyable.

Essential Information

Currency & Payment

Japan uses the Yen (¥). While credit cards are increasingly accepted, many places are still cash-only. ATMs at 7-Eleven and post offices accept international cards.

Etiquette

Remove shoes when entering homes and temples. Bowing is a common greeting. Tipping is not customary and can sometimes be considered rude.

Transportation

Get an IC card (like ICOCA or Suica) for convenient travel on trains and buses. Consider a JR Pass if you plan to travel extensively.

Language

While Japanese is the main language, tourist areas have English signage. Download a translation app and learn a few basic phrases.

Staying Connected

Rent a pocket WiFi or get a travel SIM card at the airport. Free WiFi is available at many stations and convenience stores.

Safety

Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. Tap water is safe to drink. Keep emergency numbers handy: Police 110, Ambulance 119.
