Accommodations

Where to Stay in Kyoto

We've compared some options across Kyoto to put together this list. Think of this as a curated starting point to make your own research easier rather than a guarantee or a must-stay — but we hope it helps you find somewhere you'll love.

A quick heads-up before you dive in: this page runs a little long. But wherever you are in your planning — and even if your accommodation is already booked — since this will be a first trip to Japan for most of you, we think the notes below are worth a read. Beyond the accommodation itself, they'll give you a feel for what to expect in Kyoto and how the different areas of the city compare. Many of these notes may also be useful when researching accommodation in other cities if you're planning to extend your stay and explore more of Japan — though if you find yourself visiting smaller towns, keep in mind that the layout and pace will be quite different.

How to Choose

A few things to help you navigate the list:

1

Think about how you want your trip to look and feel.

Being central, in the heart of the city (lively streets, lots of restaurants and shopping, a great home base) → Downtown

A quieter, more traditional atmosphere + being closest to our venue → Higashiyama / Gion

Easy train trips in and out of Kyoto to other cities (Osaka, Nara, Himeji, etc.) → Kyoto Station

2

Then pick your budget tier within that area. We've listed Budget and Mid-Range (and Splurge where applicable).

Our personal recommendation: Downtown is where we'd suggest most people base themselves. It's considered the heart of Kyoto and the most central spot — lively, full of restaurants and shops, and an easy hub for getting around the city. Consider Higashiyama if you'd prefer somewhere a bit quieter and more traditional, and to be closest to the wedding. We'd only point you to Kyoto Station if trips in and out of Kyoto to other cities are a real priority for you — it's the city's main hub for those trains and where the shinkansen (bullet train) stops — but the trade-off is that it's both less central and less atmospheric than the other two areas.

Before You Book

A note on your priorities

Beyond area and budget, think about what will matter most to you. On our own trips to Japan, the thing we valued most was location and convenience — on most days you're easily walking 15,000–20,000+ steps, and after a long day on your feet, being a two-minute walk from the nearest station rather than ten (or even five) makes a real difference, even if that gap sounds like nothing right now. It's why we've listed the walk to the closest station for every hotel below. But everyone's different — for you it might be a great breakfast, an onsen, a special view, room size, or something else entirely. A slightly longer walk back shouldn't be an automatic no; we just want it on your radar, because for us it was a big one.

A note on room size

This one catches a lot of first-time visitors off guard — hotel rooms in Japan run much smaller on average than what we're used to in the US, even at nicer price points. (You'll notice the same throughout Japan — many rooms, buildings, and restaurants feel more compact than what you may be used to back home.) If having more space matters to you, check the room's square footage (or square meters) before you book rather than assuming, so you're not surprised on arrival.

A note on price by area

At the Budget and Mid-Range tiers, the three areas are fairly comparable, so we'd let location and vibe drive your choice there rather than cost. The bigger gap is at the top end: Higashiyama's luxury hotels carry a real premium for that historic, temple-side setting (there isn't really a "cheap luxury" option up there), while Kyoto Station tends to give you the most room and comfort for your money — the trade-off being location and atmosphere.

A note on timing & booking

Our dates fall between two of Kyoto's busiest stretches in the spring — just after peak cherry-blossom season and just before Golden Week. So while we won't hit the absolute peak, spring in general is one of the most popular times to visit Japan, and it will still be busy. We'd really encourage you to reserve as early as you can — spring rooms in Kyoto go quickly, and the best options at every price point tend to disappear months out. The prices below are rough, general estimates rather than quotes for our exact dates, and spring rates tend to run higher, so please treat them as ballpark. One small thing to be aware of: many cities in Japan charge a local accommodation tax per person per night on top of the room rate — it's a modest amount for most rooms but worth knowing, as it's sometimes collected in cash at check-in.

📍 A note on getting to the venue (wedding day)

The venue sits up a pedestrian hill in Higashiyama, so however you travel, the final stretch is on foot — taxis and trains can only get you to the bottom. Plan for roughly a 5–10 minute walk uphill at the end. The lane up is for pedestrians and gets very crowded in spring, so please don't count on a car taking you to the door (and note that there's no parking at the venue). Comfortable shoes and a little extra time will go a long way. (For the Higashiyama hotels below we've listed the total walking time to the venue; for Downtown and Kyoto Station we've listed transit and taxi times to the foot of the hill.)

best for (day) trips in and out of the city

🚄 Kyoto Station

Kyoto's main hub for trains in and out of the city. A couple of honest notes: it's on the south end of the city rather than the center, and it's more of a transit hub than a true neighborhood — so we'd mainly point you here for the convenience of getting into and out of Kyoto to other cities.

Budget

Onyado Nono Kyoto Shichijo

★ 4.5 · 2,538 reviews · ~$100–180/night

Nearest station Kyoto Station — 6 min walk

To venue ~30 min transit · ~15 min taxi (plus the walk uphill)

Why A ryokan-style hotel with a natural hot-spring onsen, tatami floors, and a well-loved breakfast — lovely value. (It's popular, so it can get busy.)

Nearest station Kyoto Station — 5 min walk

To venue ~30 min transit · ~15 min taxi (plus the walk uphill)

Why Relaxed, garden-and-patio style with an onsen and a breakfast buffet guests speak highly of.

Mid-Range

Hotel Granvia Kyoto

Nearest station Kyoto Station — 1–2 min (it's inside the station)

To venue ~30 min transit · ~15 min taxi (plus the walk uphill)

The Thousand Kyoto

★ 4.5 · 1,442 reviews · ~$280–450/night

Nearest station Kyoto Station — 3 min walk

To venue ~30 min transit · ~15 min taxi (plus the walk uphill)

Why The nicest hotel by the station — spacious rooms (a rarity in Kyoto) with a polished feel.

One last tip: on the wedding day, pop your hotel into Google Maps for live directions — Kyoto's transit is wonderfully punctual, and the times above are approximate.
