One quick tip: plan by area. Kyoto's sights are spread across the city rather than clustered in one spot, and there are several distinct neighborhoods. It helps to look up ahead of time where the places you want to see are, north, east, south, or west, or which neighborhood, and group them by day. It'll save you a lot of backtracking and zigzagging across the city, and a lot of wasted time getting around.
