Our Picks
A running list of little things we love around Japan.
Just a little collection of things we love in Japan, and wanted to share with you. There's no real theme here, a food worth trying, a coffee shop we keep going back to, a neighborhood we loved wandering.
We'll keep adding as we find more.
- Tsukemen (つけ麺) Food
Everyone knows ramen, but you don't hear as many people talk about tsukemen, and it's one of our favorites. The noodles come separately and cold, and you dip each bite into a thick, rich broth as you go.
- Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) Food
A savory griddled pancake packed with cabbage and whatever else you like, pork, seafood, cheese, finished with sauce and mayo. Osaka and Hiroshima each do their own style. This is one Clair grew up eating.
- Shiroi Koibito (白い恋人) Souvenir · Hokkaido
A famous cookie from Hokkaido: two thin, crisp langue de chat cookies sandwiching a layer of white chocolate. It's been Clair's favorite Japanese sweet since she was little. It's originally from Hokkaido, but you don't have to go there to get it, you'll find boxes at major airports and souvenir shops around the country.
